Apple ordered to re-write 'inaccurate' Samsung statement

Apple has 48 hours to re-write a statement on its website relating to its design rights dispute with Samsung, UK judges have ruled.

Apple said it believed the message had been in compliance with the court order

Apple was forced on 18 October to publish a message making it clear that Samsung had not infringed the iPad's registered design.
However Samsung complained the statement Apple had posted did not comply with the court order.
Judges agreed and have told Apple it must be removed within 24 hours.
A new, compliant version must then be posted.
Michael Beloff QC, representing Apple, told judges that the company had thought that it had complied with the court order.
"It's not designed to punish," he said.
"It's not designed to make us grovel. The only purpose must be to dispel commercial uncertainty."
He asked that the company be given 14 days to post the replacement - but the request was firmly denied.
Lord Justice Longmore told Mr Beloff: "We are just amazed that you cannot put the right notice up at the same time as you take the other one down."

The mayor of Amsterdam says he will not ban foreign tourists from using the city's famous cannabis cafes, after months of argument over new drug laws

The mayor of Amsterdam says he will not ban foreign tourists from using the city's famous cannabis cafes, after months of argument over new drug laws.

The move comes after the new government of the Netherlands said it would be up to local authorities whether or not to impose such a ban.
Mayor Eberhard van der Laan said banning the sale of the drug to foreigners could lead to more crime.
Each year, some 1.5 million tourists visit Amsterdam to consume cannabis.
"The 1.5 million tourists will not say 'then no more marijuana', they will swarm all over the city looking for drugs," said Mayor Van der Laan, who has long opposed a ban.
"This would lead to more robberies, quarrels about fake drugs, and no control of the quality of drugs on the market - everything we have worked towards would be lost to misery."
Tourism fears
Amsterdam also relies heavily on tourism, and cannabis users make up about a third of its total visitors.
Under laws introduced by the previous conservative-led Dutch government, a national ban on foreigners using cannabis was due to be rolled out to Amsterdam by the end of this year.
It was intended to curb drug use and prevent drug dealers from operating in the Netherlands, and prevent them from buying drugs to sell abroad.
The move was strongly opposed by cafe owners, who said the law unfairly discriminated against other EU residents, and warned that 90% of their income came from foreign tourists.
There are an estimated 700 coffee shops selling cannabis in the Netherlands.
It is not strictly legal to use cannabis, but its use is tolerated and possession of small amounts was decriminalised in the 1970s.

Elephant 'speaks Korean' with help of his trunk

An Asian elephant called Koshik has astounded scientists with his Korean language skills.
Researchers report that the mammal has learnt to imitate human speech and can say five words in Korean: hello, no, sit down, lie down and good.
The zoo animal places the tip of his trunk into his mouth to transform his natural low rumble into a convincing impression of a human voice.
The study is published in the journal Current Biology.
Koshik's vocal abilities mean that elephants now join a growing list of animals that are able to mimic man, from parrots and mynah birds to more unusual animals such as sea lions or the recently reported case of ahuman-sounding beluga whale.
Meaningful conversation?
The study's lead author Dr Angela Stoeger, from the University of Vienna in Austria, said she first came across Koshik after videos of the elephant, who belongs to Everland Zoo in South Korea, were posted on YouTube.
After making contact with the zoo, she went to South Korea to record the animal so she could study its unusual vocal talent.
Dr Stoeger said: "We asked native Korean speakers, who had never experienced the elephant before, to write down what they understood when we played back recordings from Koshik. check out this link;http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-20142858

Poll of polls, 29 October

President Barack Obama is to resume an election campaign suspended in the aftermath of storm Sandy, which wreaked havoc in the north-eastern US.

Ruined homes in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, 31 October 2012
Mr Obama has planned campaign stops on Thursday in Nevada, Colorado and Wisconsin.
On Wednesday, he toured parts of New Jersey struck by the storm with Republican Governor Chris Christie.
President Obama pledged help for those affected by Sandy as he visited Brigantine, New Jersey
"You guys are in my thoughts and prayers," the president said during a visit to an emergency shelter in Atlantic City. "We are going to be here for the long haul."
More than five million homes and businesses across the north-east still have no electricity. Some utilities are warning it could take seven to 10 days to restore full power.
In the New Jersey city of Hoboken, across the Hudson River from New York City, the National Guard has arrived to evacuate about 20,000 people and distribute meals.
Gov Christie, usually one of Mr Obama's fiercest critics, spoke of his "great working relationship" with the Democratic president.
"I cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for the people of our state," said Mr Christie.
Mr Romney held two rallies in Florida on Wednesday, where his campaign said he tried to strike a "positive tone".
Election day is on 6 November, and polls suggest the candidates are running neck and neck.
